CRAIOVA, THE TOWN OF BRÂNCUSI

Craiova, one of the largest cities in Romania, is situated in the South-West of the country; it dates back to the days of the Dacians who named it Pelendava.
Not very far from Bucharest (299 km), Craiova lies in the Romanian Plain on the left side of the river Jiu, at the same distance (about 100 km) from the Danube (to the South) and the Carpathians (to the North).


As the capital of the historical province of Oltenia, Craiova is a historic, commercial and cultural centre.
The town is famous for its University, which gladly accepts foreign students. The National Theatre has also achieved fame being awarded many international prizes at festivals all over the world. The Art Museum with its permanent "C. Brâncusi" exhibition is worthy of note. There are also many places of cultural interest.
The University of Craiova was founded in 1947. Nowadays, it comprises 17 faculties and 2 colleges: philology, philosophy, sociology, history, law, chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, theology, economics, agronomy and polytechnics education.
