Crossing Borders: Redefining Geographical, Cultural and Individual Limits

to be held in Craiova, Romania, 24-26 March 2016

Information is the oxygen of the modern age. It seeps through the walls topped by barbed wire, it wafts across the electrified borders.” Ronald Reagan

In the age of computer technology and the internet, information is unprecedentedly available to people in remote geographical areas, to people living in isolation or in the midst of bustling communities. People have unlimited access to limitless knowledge.

Nevertheless, it is easily noticeable that cultural borders and limitations still play an important role in the way people behave, do politics and formulate their ethical, social and cultural beliefs. Despite the mushrooming theories in linguistic, cultural, communicative and general education, despite massive investment in integrative strategies dictated by governments, we sometimes seem to be failing at cultural integration and humanistic openness to tolerating and successfully coexisting with cultures that are different. It is as if accepting someone’s cultural identity would somehow delete our own.

We invite researchers, academics, writers and educators to imagine a world in which knowledge is power and, what is more, a world in which knowledge, culture and languages have the power to delete borders of any kind. A world in which people speak the same language of humanities in the quest of a better self in relation to the community and to oneself. A world in which empathy, genuine listening skills and word power play a decisive role in shaping communities and principles. An international community in which education based on mutual understanding and human values steps into place to sustain globalization as a much needed culturally integrative tool.
